How Melbourne IT helped a small business get more customers.

This month, we follow the success of Michelle Collins, entrepreneur and owner of Cheap Phone Deals, a successful small business that helps people and business owners save money by finding the best mobile phone, landline and Internet plans. Michelle came to Melbourne IT looking for affordable solutions to turn her small business into an Internet-based, income-generating business.

Read about Michelle's business success story …

Well where do I start. My website was in need of a serious makeover and apparently, ranking high in Search Engines could help me potentially generate more income. The only thing I knew was that I wanted to run an Internet-based business.

What that meant I had no idea! I was out of my depth, and very wary about the IT Industry, having heard of expensive fees for search engine marketing services. How to build a website that helps you sell... securely.

No matter what business you’re in, whether it’s sausages and meat pies, fashion, holiday adventures, services and consulting, if you have a website, it should help drive your bottom line.
In other words, it should help you sell!

There are many ways of “selling” through your website. And it all depends on whether you have ecommerce-friendly products that, in one form or another, can be packaged and shipped to your customers. If your products are service-related, information-based, or “experiential”, meaning customers need to see, touch, smell, hear or taste your products before they’re willing to part with their plastic, then more in-depth, one-on-one discussions with customers may be needed to close the deal.

So how do you make sure your website is helping you sell?

Are your products eCommerce-friendly?

The fact is, unless you’re selling ecommerce-friendly products like flowers, books, CDs, or travel-related services, it may be a very risky move to bet on a website as a main source of sales revenue.

Many products and services are not designed to be sold directly through a website in one transaction. The good news is, your website can help drive revenue if used effectively to generate highly qualified leads for your sales force. So if you’re like the majority of small businesses in Australia, your website objective should be to start a conversation that will lead customers to call or visit your store.
